Doesn’t work I’ve used these drops for years and trusted them. On a May 2019 trip to Henry Coe State Park (CA), I treated a liter of clear water that had a couple of small but visible live (twitching) larvae floating around. (I’m not a microbiologist… maybe they were mosquito larvae; I’m not sure.) 30 minutes after treatment the larvae were still twitching! I mixed another batch of Aquamira drops and treated it again, waited another 30 minutes and still the larvae were alive! Yuck! My trust in this product is gone. My drops had NOT expired, and temperatures were mild. After the trip I called Aquamira customer service about 6 times over a three week period. I could’t get anyone on the phone, nor would anyone return my messages. Their website even boasts “At Aquamira Technologies, we hate automated phone systems as much as you do. When you call Aquamira you will talk to a real person.”Excuse me? 0 stars for product effectiveness and 0 for customer support.

Water filters like Katadyn or LifeStraws and have even used a Steripen You can never have too many options for treating your drinking water while in the mountains. I use Iodine, Chlorine Dioxide (Aquamira), Water filters like Katadyn or LifeStraws and have even used a Steripen. Each have their Pro’s and Con’s but I find Iodine tabs to taste the worst but be the most compact and easy to use. A very small set of sealed Iodine tabs live in my pack always. Aquamira is my “Go To” choice for lightweight packability and use and comes on every trip. They last for years and treat HUGE amounts of water. Some people say there is a taste, but I think they make some great water out on the trail. They even kill Cryptosporidium after 4hrs. Combine this liquid treatment with a large lightweight bladder and you’ve got all the treated water you could need and never have to pack a heavy filter again.Filters are nice if your water sources are disgusting and limited but pack size and weight plus filter life make them higher maintenance…
